The Battle of Algiers -- battle of fanatical resolves

Most people who have seen Gile Pontecorvo's The Battle of Algiers saw it as the iconic anti-colonial film which it was on first viewing, where the director portrayed the cause of the underdog, in this instance that of the Algerian people. Whatever the sympathies of Pontecorvo the man, Pontecorvo the director mercilessly presents the stark reality of the revolutionary situation. What the early viewers seems to have missed is the puritanical zeal of the Algerian revolutionary group, the National Liberation Front (FLN), which resurfaced in 1992 as Islamic Salvation Front (FIS) when a civil war between the socialist government confronted a Taliban-like insurgent group. Of course, there was this difference. In the 1992 election, the Islamic Salvation Front (FIS) had won the election but the socialist regime refused to give up power. It resulted in seven years of bloody civil war when the army was able to reassert its authority. So, whoever saw Pontecorvo's classic in the post-1992 and even the post-September 11, 2001 era cannot miss the portrayal of an Islamic revolutionary group, which was suppressed in the most cruel manner by French soldiers, some of whom were victims of Nazi Germany's anti-Semitic concentration and death camps. It was a mortal combat between two groups of victims.
Pontecorvo seems to notice the unmistakable ethic of fanatic discipline of sacrificing the individual for the sake of the nation. The freedom fighters are caught in the crossfire between a ruthless colonial force and an equally ruthless revolutionary resistance force. It is the battle of fanatical resolve on both the sides.
