BJP's Sushma Swaraj said that she shared modified adjournment motion text with CPI-M's Basudeb Acharia and CPI's Gurudas Dasgupta

Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and senior BJP member Sushma Swaraj said that her party had agreed to a modified text of an adjournment motion on black money because that was the only way out the impasse and her party was keen on the discussion and the running of the House. She denied that the BJP had come to an agreement with the Congress at the back of the Left parties and that the BJP had broken ranks with other opposition parties.

This was exactly the charge that CP-M's leader in Rajya Sabha made on Thursday against the BJP, saying that the ruling party and the principal opposition party were working in tandem, and that this has been happening for the last three sessions. Yechuri pointed out that in the last session the BJP had again agreed to discussion on price rise in any form. Yechuri had however agreed that there was a general cooperation as was inevitable in a parliamentary system among all the opposition parties, and this was true of the Left and the BJP as well.

The charges and counter-charges were traded because the Congress had acceded to the BJP's adjournment motion on black money, and not to the adjournment motion moved by the Left parties on the issue of price rice. Acharia said that this favour done to the BJP by the Congress might be due to the fact that the government needs the BJP's support in allowing FDI into the insurance sector and into pension funds, something to which the Left was opposed to.

Swaraj explained that the BJP was willing to support the Left's adjournment motion on price rise but since the Left parties had agreed to discuss it under Rule 193, it was not her party's fault. Gurudas Das Gupta had however argued that the Left would discuss the suo motu statement that finance minister Pranab Mukherjee had made on the opening day (Nov 22) on the economic situation, and at the same press for an adjournment motion on price rise, and one did not exclude the other.

While Swaraj maintained that BJP and the Left had agreed to raise these issues -- price rise (Left), black money (BJP) -- and the BJP would support the Left on the discussion on price rise, Gurudas Das Gupta had moved an adjournment motion on black money. The BJP tried to remain unruffled in the face of this embarrassment, and only said that there is no problem if there are two adjournment motions against the issue of black money, she was sure that it would either be merged with the one moved by the BJP or it would be rejected.
