BJP quite keen to push Lokpal Bill

A senior BJP leader speaking on condition of anonymity revealed that the main opposition party will want the Lokpal Bill passed. He affirmed that the Lokapl bill will be passed and there will not be much of a problem. He indicated that there is no uncertainty about it any more. There was however a caveat. The party will press for an amendment if it is not satisfied with the text of the bill. He has also denied that the government and the ruling party, the Congress, were in consultation with the BJP on the text of the bill. "We have not been shown the text," he said.

He believes that disruption will come from other parties, and he was indirectly pointing to 'quota parties' - those parties insisting that there should be quota for Scehduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs) and Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in the composition of the Lokpal. "There cannot be a quota even for choosing honest people," was his wry comment.

Asked if he personally believed that Lokpal was a good idea and that if it could be an effective weapon against corruption, the senior leader said, "I believe the idea of Lokapl is good. It is necessary. It will put fear in the hearts of corrupt people."

He did have reservations about the selection procedure of the director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which would have the chief justice of India as one of the selection committee members. But he was however agreeable to the idea that the CBI's administrative setup should be with the Lokpal and not with the government.
