Karunanidhi to approve text of resolution, says DMK

New Delhi: A senior DMK leader in Lok Sabha speaking to DNA on condition of anonymity said that the government has not got back to the party till the evening with the text of the resolution on Sri Lanka to be passed by the House to defuse the political crisis. He has also disclosed that the text of the resolution has to be approved by party patriarch M.Karunanidhi. The DMK leader said that without a resolution a debate on the issue of Sri Lankan Tamils would not be of any use as a short-duration debate last week has proved. He argued that the government has to move the resolution. That leaves the UPA government in a tight spot because it will have to avoid the devil of DMK's wrath and the deep sea of diplomatic relations with Sri Lanka. Congress members in the government were tight-lipped about the draft of the resolution. The text is likely to be worked out finance minister by P.Chidambaram, external affairs minister Salman Khurshid, parliamentary affairs minister Kamalnath in consultation with prime minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi. While DMK defends Karunanidhi's ultimatum as an outcome of the deep anguish of the people of Tamil Nadu over the atrocities against Sri Lankan Tamils, sources in the rival AIADMK think that the DMK finds Congress to be useless baggage and it is looking for ways of dropping it. The AIADMK source speaking on condition of anonymity has argued that the DMK could not have left the government over the issue of increase in prices of petrol and diesel, and that it found the Sri Lankan Tamil issue to be a deeply evocative one. Asked whether the DMK is preparing to get back to the BJP-led NDA, the AIADMK leader said it would not be possible for DMK to get back to the NDA fold if Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi is to lead the BJP and NDA. He said other leaders in the BJP may have considered the option of taking back the DMK into the NDA but with Modi at the helm that would not be possible. He was referring to the special equation that Modi and AIADMK leader and Tamil Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalithaa enjoy. The DMK has not disclosed what it would do if the government does not come up with a resolution that satisfies its leader.
