Yeh Jawaani Hai Diwaani: Find-yourself movie

My friend Aakshi Magazine had summed up the experience of Yeh Jawaani Hai Diwaani superbly. She said what was lacking in the movie was 'deewanapan'. And she is absolutely right. There is a deliberate attempt on the part of the young characters in the movie to have fun, to go wild, some sort of an American syndrome to be happy somehow instead of being happy.
Basically all the characters are normal, staid people who are a little fed up with being normal and staid. So they go trekking to Manali. Something similar to what happens in Zindagi Na Milegi Dubaara, where the characters go off to Spain. Naina Talwar (Deepika Padukone) is a nerd who turns into a wacko. She is a medical student and carries her textbook on neuroimmunology on the trip. Kabir Thapar (Ranbir Kapoor) is the chap who wants to travel and gets a scholarship to go to North-Western in Chicago to do journalism and later becomes the cameraman for Fox Travels. Eight years elapse. Then there is the marriage of Aditi (Kalki Koechlin)and the friends are back again, and they discover what they are. This is a 'finding-yourself'movie like Zindagi Na Milegi Dubaara, Wake Up Sid (director Ayan Mukherjee's earlier film starring Ranbir Kapoor and Konkona Sen and which was a heart-warming movie). But Wake Up Sid did not do so well because there were not too many forgettable songs as there are in Yeh Jawaani Hai Diwaani.
Even "Budtameez Dil..."is quite a comedown in the film. Ranbir Kapoor does a Shammi Kapoor act which is ok but the music is quite a disappointment. The Madhur Dixit dance number at the beginning of the film is a throwback to Sanjay Leeela Bhansali's Sawariya' but is pleasantly garish, and Madhuri Dixit gives a miraculous performance. She is full of life and does nothing to hide her 40 + age and she looks magical. Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor played the kind of roles they played in their earlier fim, Bachna Ai Haseenon. Deepika is still awkward and and shy and demure and that adds to her charm. Ranbir Kapoor has acted naturally.
